The autonomous Tatarstan republic is situated in — western Russia. The Tatarstan republic has its own capital city. It is Kazan, the capital and major historic, cultural and economic centre of republic.
Kazan is located on the left bank of the Volga River where the Kazanka River joins it, eighty-five kilometers north of the Kama tributary.
The city has a beautiful Kremlin. Major monuments in the Kremlin are Annunciation Cathedral and mysterious Soyembika Tower, named after the last queen of Kazan. Central Kazan is divided into two districts by the Bolag canal and Lake Kaban.
One of the most famous buildings in central Kazan is a former ‘Smolentzev and Shmelev’ tea house and hotel, now the Shalyapin Palace Hotel. It is located on Universitetskaya Street, at the corner of Universitetskaya and Bauman Street.
